COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
SUMMIT HEALTH CARE CAREERS INSTITUTE
Summit Health and the Chambersburg Hospital have designed a program to give juniors and seniors an opportunity to explore various health care careers. Selected students will engage in critical thinking, observation, inquiry, assessment and reflection on possible career choices through education presentations, mentor relationships with multiple health care professionals and volunteer service experiences in a variety of health care settings. The institute is offered for one semester per year from 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. Monday through Friday. The experience is free of charge and the student earns .50 credit application and interview required.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Seniors have the opportunity to earn school credit and be paid during a work experience relating to their educational pathway. To qualify, students my carry two full-year courses (2 credits) in their chosen pathway in both their junior and senior year. Employment must be directly related to their pathway. Students must fill out an application and have the recommendation of their counselor and principal. Recommendations are based on the student's attendance, grade, and discipline records. The Co-op Coordinator will complete supervision and on-site visits once a month.
CAREER EXPLORATION
Seniors can earn school credit for participating in unpaid learning experiences that relate to their educational pathway. The experience must relate to the educational pathway and the career goal that the student is pursuing after graduation. To qualify, students must fill out an application and have the recommendation of their counselor and principal. The Co-op Coordinator will complete supervision and on-site visits once a month.
ELEMENTARY EDUCATION
Seniors considering studying elementary education upon graduation can apply for an unpaid experience in one the CASD's elementary buildings and still earn high school credit. Students are paired with a teacher who volunteers to introduce the student to elementary education. To qualify, students must fill out an application and have the recommendation of their counselor and principal. The Co-op Coordinator will complete supervision and on-site visits once a month.
CHILD DEVELOPMENT
Students in the high school child development program can earn high school credits through this unique unpaid learning experience. All assignments are in a nursery school environment. Upon completion of the classes and work experience, students can earn a level one childcare certificate. CASHS child development program is recognized by the state to award this certificate.
